A Duck with a Disability?

Eleanor:
Today we went to the duck pond where we met a stunted duckling. It was cute. It pecked Sue once. It drank our tadpole water! It had stunted wings with no feathers because people were giving it too much bread. Ducks need to eat healthier food. PS- very naughty people!

Responsible Pet Ownership

Hi Everybody,
We have been talking about responsible pet ownership this week. Today we walked to the duck pond to get some fresh clean water for our tadpoles. We need to change their water every few days so that they grow up happy and healthy. Sue showed us how to clean the tank and move the tadpoles from one tank to the other without hurting them. When the tadpoles grow into frogs we will take them back to the pond. We need to remember to feed them every few days too. The cross on the lid of the tank is to remind us not to put our hands in the water. Fish and tadpoles get scared to death when you put your hands in. The tank is see through so that we can look through the sides and watch the tadpoles swim.

Go for Your Life !

Eleanor:
At assembly today the Go For Your Life team came to talk to us about everyday food and sometimes food. There were questions and there were prizes and I got a beach volley ball. Ricky got a sweat band. We played a copy cat game, musical freeze and a balloon game.

The Mystery Bug !

Click on the picture to find out what this grub grows into.

Tim:
I found this grub on a tree first then it walked on the path. I have seen one of these before. This was my second time.
I picked it up because it looked nice and because I wanted to show my friends. I put it in some bark. I used a leaf to get it on and then I had to use a stick to keep it on. Then I covered it with another bit of bark and walked to school.
Eleanor:
When I patted it, it was soft. I thought it was a female but it might be a male. It was small and cute and it had a little black head. It looks like a witchetty grub.
Ricky:
It looks like a spit fire.It was about to spit. Tim scared it. He got a rubber spider and he was trying to get it to spit. The spit looks like skin colour it is ooey and gooey and disgusting. It poisons its enemies. It hides in bark because it is camouflaged.
Danny:
It looks so small it's about 3.5cm long. Tim asked Jamie about what it turns into but Jamie doesn't know.

Plover Invasion

Tim:
We have 4 plovers on our oval. They are scaring other birds and us. They open their wings and make loud sounds. We are not allowed to play on the oval until they go away. Andy locked both of the gates.

Our class decided that if we see the plovers coming we will:

Stay calm and quiet.

Protect our eyes.

Walk to a safe place like the classroom or veranda.

If Bowling Balls Were Made of China...

Eleanor:
If bowling balls were made of china they would break really easily on the bowling alley because they would be made of china like plates. That's wrong! So, to make it right you would have to make out of steel or plastic.

DO NOT SCRIBBLE ON THE WALL !

What does this sign really mean?

Tim:

Hello I am a talking sign. My job is to tell you no smoking anywhere in the school.

Eleanor:

Hello I'm a talking sign. I tell you not to smoke in a bus because you will get cancer and disease or you will go out of your mind. So you must go from fat to skinny by exercise not by smoking.

Daniel:

Hi I am a talking sign. My job is to tell you that you are not allowed to smoke because of disease and cancer. Thank you.

Ricky:

Hello I am a talking sign. I tell you not to smoke in restaurants. People will get cancer. People are not allowed to smoke in Mc Donald's.

Recycle a Coffee Lid?

Hi Everybody,
We have thought of lots of things you could do to recycle a plastic coffee lid. You could turn it into:
  • Wheels for a car construction, eyes on a monster , buttons for a giant a clock face or even a little mouse!
  • A gas mask if you put some elastic on each side.
  • A pot to grow sprouts and seedlings in .
  • If you had two they could be bats for a table soccer game or you could roll them and see who can roll one the furthest.
  • A giant counter.
  • A play- dough cutter.
  • An object to trace around to make circles in art.
  • Stepping stones in a fairy garden.
  • A sand pit toy.
  • A shaker if you tape two together and fill them with rice.
  • Shoes for a teddy bear.
  • Seed, pellet and water trays for small pets.
  • A paint mixing pot in the art room.

Do you have any other ideas?

Recycling Challenge

Hi Everyone,
Our challenge for the next few weeks is to find at least one more way to use an object before it is thrown in the garbage or recycling bin. The Crew had a brainstorming session and these are the ideas they came up with for reusing an empty drink bottle.
  • Cut it in half and create a mini green house to grow plants in it.
  • Unscrew the lid and use it to store paint or food dye washes
  • Fill it up with tap water and use it again.
  • Use it in box construction for retro boosters on a rocket or to make a bird and hang it sideways on a mobile. It could be a car too.
  • Cover it with paper mache as a craft activity to make a pretty water bottle for watering plants.
  • Collect lots and make a game of skittles.

Have you got any more ideas to add to our list?

Oh no ! What are we going to do?

What would you think if your saw this sign on the classroom door in the morning?
What would you do ?
What should the teacher do?
Eleanor:
I would just say 'Sue you need take three deep breaths and talk to someone about it. I'd be a bit worried if I saw that sign.
Ricky:
I would think 'Oh no !' I would want to run away.
Tim:
Teachers aren't allowed to be in a bad mood so that wouldn't happen anyway.'
Danny:
I would say, 'Sue you are having a level three reaction to a level one problem'.
Braydon:
I would be scared.

Do you know what this sign is for?
Perhaps you will be able to answer that question after clicking on the picture and watching the
Dragonfly TV Episode it is linked to.

Eleanor:
I am a talking sign. I'm here to tell you that manatees live in the water. You need to go slow in a boat because sometimes propellers can cut a manatee's tail.
Thank you.

Tim:
Be careful because there are manatees under the water. Boats need to slow down!

Ricky:
Manatees are in the water and boat's propellers cut the manatees tails. Go very slow in boats otherwise manatees will be cut.

Chocolate Ripple Log Cake

Hi Everybody,
We made a Chocolate Ripple Cake. Sue says it is very Australian and everybody should learn how to make it. If you click on one of the pictures you will find a site that has the recipe on it.
We changed the recipe a little bit by putting strawberry jam and cream on the biscuits.
We hope you try it and that you like it too.
